As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world and claimed millions of lives, it also entrenched deep structural inequalities both at an international and community level. In a single moment, it distilled the shortcomings of our leaders and laid bare, with tragic consequences, the injustices of our societies.

My friend and colleague and one of the education giants of our time, Mary Hatwood Futrell, wrote this on the passing of Nelson Mandela in 2013: “We pause to mark the distance we’ve come and keep focus on what’s yet to cover. One thing seems certain as the need for equity persists: the push for progress will be equally persistent.”

What a difference a year makes! If someone had told me on March 8th, 2020, that news cycles and my personal life would focus for a year on wearing masks, hand hygiene, physical distancing, and vaccines, I would have been hard pressed to believe it. Without question, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a visceral impact on every aspect of our everyday lives, but its impacts have gone far beyond our personal experiences.
