Description:
This project is a continuation of a small scale earlier project in the same region, where schools are supported for 2 years and then pass the baton to other schools. They stay, through the unions, in contact for exchanges of experiences. Teachers, union members, receive training about the causes and effects of school drop out and of child labour, and learn how to find ways to keep children in school or help them return into the regular classes. The Korça region has a big population of Gypsies and Roma, groups among which drop-out and non-attendance is a huge problem.
Goals:
Reduce school drop out and child labour by improving the quality of teaching and education in general, with, in this region, a special focus on the Roma and Gypsy minorities.
Activities:
Training of teachers (union members, but others are invited); establishing school "policies" to reduce drop-out (f.ex. forming monitoring groups with teachers, parents, pupils that take care of a group of pupils), identifying and organising educational activities for "at risk pupils"; educating parents, involving local organisations (including Roma organisations) and authorities.
Results:
Substantial reduction of drop-out in all participating schools, improved school climate, proud teachers and fellow pupils. Even after the extra financial support stops, nearly all children stay in school, as the families now have done all the efforts to help the child stay in or return to school.
Next to that, improved capacity for the unions (stronger local organisations), and improved visibility.
