Child Labour
Description:
Four EI affiliates are developing a child labour free zone in the rural commune of Nébia (Sanguié province), close to the city of Réo. 5 schools have been selected for the intervention. Gold mining and agriculture are among the main economic activities for the child workers in Nébia.
Goals:
To change the social norm about child labour and make education desirable and relevant in Nébia;
To increase school attendance and move towards a zone increasingly free of child labour, with a specific focus on girls education and gender equality;
To include local authorities, including the local education authorities, at every stage of implementation of the project, in order to ensure its sustainability and to strengthen the social dialogue;
To strenghten the education unions.
Activities:
Develop awareness raising and pedagogic guides;
Train local teachers and union leaders on children rights and child labour;
Engage pupils in the lobbying against child labour: through the setting up of one anti-child labour club in each school and though theatre plays on child labour;
Engage the school communities in the struggles against child labour: through the setting up of monitoring committees, meeting with ressource/influencial person, organizing exchange meetings with child workers and families of children victims of child labour;
